Let me start the review with the fact that movie is absolutely beautiful. The animation style is refreshing and a treat for the eyes. The book of life tells the story of Manolo and his best friend Joaquin's quest for the heart of Maria. While doing so you get to see an adventure with a lot of charm and heart. While the story lacks some punch for adults and has some questionable parts, this doesn't change the fact that it is a blast to watch from start to finish. The scene stealer of this movie besides the animation is definitely the soundtrack. I'm not going to talk more about it, you should just hear it yourself. The voice acting is also pretty good. A must-see for animation lovers.

Want to see a refreshingly new type of animation? Well don’t look any further, because you will like the unconventional and very beautiful, animation style from The Book of Life. Furthermore, the film has a well-balanced story, combining heartbreaking and cheerful moments. It may not be the most astounding storyline ever, but I am sure you will like it as well as the morale behind it. Last but not least, the music was exceptional. They have adapted existing songs in such a way where it fits seamlessly within the film.

#exceptional 4.5

It can’t be denied, The Book of Life’s style of animation is refreshingly original on the big screen. The setting is mostly lively and colorful, though it can also be dark and gloomy without taking away the charm. The storyline could lack a bit for adults, but either way it is a well-balanced story, combining heartbreaking and cheerful moments as well as action and comedy. The music really is the cherry on the cake. They took existing music and made it fit the movie just right without removing the elements that made the originals so great. Altogether it is a blast from beginning to end and a movie which can be enjoyed by practically anyone.
